The IRS was established in 1862 and is a bureau in the Department of the Treasury that is responsible for tax collection and tax law enforcement. The IRS collects individual income taxes and employment taxes, as well as corporate, estate, excise, and gift taxes. The IRS’s mission is to help taxpayers understand their annual tax obligations. The IRS has four primary divisions: wage and investment, small business and self employed, tax exempt and government entities, and large and mid-size business.
